Skapa en hydrofon (undervattenslyssnare)

Hur kan vi upptäcka den dolda världen under vattnet?

Under denna drop-in-workshop bjuds barn och familjer in att experimentera, designa och bygga sina egna hydrofoner. En hydrofon fungerar som en undervattenslyssnare; när den sänks ner i vattnet förstärker den ljuden under ytan och ger en glimt av en annars dold värld. Med hjälp av återvunnet material får barnen bygga en prototyp av sin apparat och testa den direkt i hamnen. De kan sedan antingen ta med sig sin hydrofon hem eller lämna kvar den på Omställningslabbet för att inspirera framtida skapare.
Workshoppen leds av Betty Wallingford, barnkulturdesigner och samarbetspartner till Göteborgs Sjöfartsmuseum och Stadsmuseum. Hennes arbete utforskar design som ett verktyg för att väcka empati och storytelling.

Build a hydrophone (underwater listening device)

How can we connect with the hidden world underwater? During this drop-in workshop, children and families are invited to experiment, design, and build their own hydrophones. A hydrophone acts as an underwater microphone; when lowered into water, it amplifies submerged sounds, offering a glimpse into the world beneath the surface. Using recycled materials, children can prototype their device and test it out in the harbor. They can either take it home afterward or leave it at Omställningslabbet to inspire future creators.

The workshop is led by Betty Wallingford, a child culture designer and collaborator to Göteborgs Sjöfartsmusem and Stadsmuseum. Her practice explores design as a tool to spark empathy and storytelling.
